What a dropping door is telling you

A hinge does not sag on its own schedule. It sags under load, and on a panelled Sub-Zero the load is the customer’s own joinery: a solid front, a stone or metal facing, a heavy pull. Sub-Zero publishes a panel weight limit for each cabinet width, and a front rebuilt during a remodel can pass that limit without anyone weighing it. So the first measurement is not the hinge; it is the panel.

The floor has a vote

Sub-Zero’s installation instructions have the cabinet levelled to the floor rather than to the cabinetry beside it, and warn that getting that wrong changes the way the door closes. On the older houses out here the floor is the thing that has moved: settled joists, a new floor laid over an old one, a unit shimmed once and never checked again. A door that has dropped a fraction at the handle side often turns out to be a cabinet leaning half a degree.

Age, honestly

These kitchens run long-serving built-ins, and that is not in itself a problem. Gaskets, hinges, fans and controls are replaceable. What we look for is whether the door is still being asked to do a job it can do: a seal that grips all round, a panel inside its allowance, a cabinet standing level. When the answer is yes, the repair is at the door and the cooling is left alone.
