Sub-Zero Repair in Cougar Mountain, Bellevue

On Cougar Mountain, a Sub-Zero freezer that will not hold temperature is worked from the outside in: door, condenser, air, defrost, and the sealed system last. Why the gauges wait

Gauges on a sealed system tell us a great deal, which is exactly why we hold them back. Each step before them clears a cause that would otherwise muddy the pressures. A door letting in room air, a condenser under a mat of dust and a fan that has stopped will all warm a freezer, and none of them is a refrigerant fault.

Five steps, in this order

  1. Door. A paper strip round the frame, and the gasket inspected for rips or tears. Sub-Zero recommends that a technician fits any replacement.
  2. Condenser. Behind the kickplate on Designer units. Sub-Zero’s guide gives owners the cleaning, every six to twelve months, and warns that skipping it can cost temperature.
  3. Air. The freezer evaporator fan, and baskets not packed so tight that air cannot pass.
  4. Defrost. Ice on the coil that the normal defrost cycles should have cleared.
  5. Sealed system. Gauges connected, and only after the first four come up clean.

How far above the setting it is reading

Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting gives no temperature at which the early steps stop being worth doing, and neither do we: at any reading above the 0°F setting the door, the condenser and the air path are worked first. What a large gap changes is planning. The further the freezer has drifted, the earlier we expect to be into the defrost side or the sealed system, so the visit is booked with time for that rather than squeezed.
