What the frost line tells us

Frost that forms in a band marks a length of gasket that has stopped meeting the frame. A strip down the hinge side, one along the top edge, a patch in a single corner: each points at a different stretch of seal, and at a different reason for it. Frost spread evenly over the back of the compartment is another pattern altogether, and it moves our attention further in.

Sub-Zero’s own first checks

When frost, condensation or ice builds inside, Sub-Zero’s Designer Use and Care Guide asks for four things to be confirmed: the condenser is clean, the door or drawer closes properly, it has not been left ajar, and the gasket has no rips or tears. A torn gasket is listed as a job for service rather than for the owner.

We take the same four in that order and add one of our own, the hang of the door. A door sagging at the handle side leaves a gap at the seal, whatever the age of the gasket.

How an Enatai call runs

1. Model and serial are read from the rating plate inside the cabinet.
2. The frost is looked at where it lies before any of it is cleared.
3. The door is closed on a paper strip along the frosted stretch, then round the rest of the frame.
4. Level and hinge are read, since a door out of true makes its own leak.
5. A price for the repair comes before any of it is done; the $89 service call is deducted from that price.
