Start with what you can hear

Before any reading is taken, it is worth standing in a quiet kitchen for a minute. A cabinet running warm usually sounds different first. A compressor that no longer stops, a fan that has picked up a ticking or a rattle where it used to be steady, a fan that has gone silent altogether: each of those points somewhere different, and each is audible before a thermometer notices anything.

What the sound rarely tells you is which. So it sets the question, and the readings answer it.

What Sub-Zero lists for a warm cabinet

The Designer guide groups high temperatures with a unit that runs excessively or gives off too much heat, and names the same short set of causes: a dirty condenser, a door or drawer not closing properly, one left ajar. A warmer room makes the compressors run longer too. The presets are 38°F for the refrigerator and 0°F for the freezer.

The order we test in

1. The door. A paper strip at the corners and sides, and the reveals round the panel. A leak here explains a warm cabinet on its own.
2. The condenser. It sits behind the kickplate, which comes off with two mounting screws, and Sub-Zero asks for it to be cleaned every six to twelve months. Dust across the fins starves the coil of air.
3. The fans. The condenser fan draws room air through the coil; the fan inside moves cold air round the compartment. Either one slowing shows up as a warm reading with the compressor still running.
4. The sealed system, on gauges, only after the first three have passed.

Each step that passes rules out a dearer repair behind it. Nothing is replaced until a price is agreed, and that price already has the $89 service call taken off. Lake Hills, Robinswood and West Lake Sammamish share this East sector.
