Telling the two apart

Door frost starts at the leak. It builds on the gasket, on the frame just inside it, and on whatever is stored nearest that stretch of door. Defrost trouble starts at the back, where the cold is made, and works forward while the seal stays clear.

When both show, the door is still tested first. A leaking seal feeds damp air to the whole compartment and can leave more frost than a normal defrost clears. Once the seal is proven, whatever frost comes back belongs to the defrost side.

The owner’s part

Sub-Zero’s Designer guide gives owners one step for heavy icing: the unit switched off, the ice softened with a hair dryer switched to low, moved continuously rather than held in one place, and the water wiped away afterwards. Its safety page rules out any other device or method for speeding up a defrost. That clears the ice. It does not stop the next layer forming.

The order of a Surrey Downs visit

1. Model and serial read from the rating plate.
2. The frost pattern noted where it lies.
3. The freezer seal strip-tested along its full length, and the door’s hinge and level read.
4. The defrost side tested once the door is sound.
5. A price set ahead of the work, and the $89 service call subtracted from it once the repair goes ahead.
