Handle Working Loose on a Wood Panel

On a Designer column the handle is fixed to the custom wood panel, not to the refrigerator. It works loose when its fixings lose grip in the wood, or when the door needs a hard pull every time it opens. Where the handle sits

Sub-Zero recommends D-style handles on Designer panels, placed near the edge away from the hinge and centred top to bottom. That spot gives the most leverage for opening the door, and it also means every pull runs through the handle fixings into the wood.

Why it loosens

  • The wood gives. Each pull works the fixings a little, and the fibres around them crush until the handle rocks.
  • The door is hard to open. A gasket gripping the frame, a panel bearing on its neighbour or a unit out of level all make the opening pull heavier, day after day.
  • The panel is heavy. A panel near its weight limit takes more effort to start moving, and the handle carries that effort.

What we do, and what the cabinetmaker does

A fixing tightened again into crushed wood soon loosens again. Repairing the holes or remounting the hardware is panel work, and it belongs to the cabinetmaker. Our part is the door. We find why it takes a hard pull and put that right, so a repaired handle is not overloaded from the first day.
